The Ministry of Finance of Ethiopia has called for an expression of interest to partially privatize Ethio Telecom. The invitation for bids is a continuation of the first successful transaction when Ethiopia awarded the first Telcom license to a consortium led by Safaricom in May 2021.
The earlier plan of the Ethiopian Government was to launch a tendering process to partially privatize the State-owned telecom company in March 2022. However, it was postponed allegedly due to the prevailing local and international economic environment.
After a delay of almost a year, ECA (Ethiopian Communication Authority) is resuming the licensing process for the second new full-service nationwide telecom license, named License B. The advertisement inviting stakeholders was posted on the website of the Ministry of Finance on November 16th. The last date for submitting the Expressions of Interest is 20th December. The successful bidder will own 40% of the equity share capital of Ethio Telecom.
