As a testimony of the growing relationship between Egypt and Israel, the first direct flight between the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv and Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh took off last Sunday, Easter day. The flight was operated by the El-Al subsidiary Sun d’Or. It departed Ben Gurion International Airport at 0715 GMT
As a testimony of the growing relationship between Egypt and Israel, the first direct flight between the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv and Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh took off last Sunday, Easter day. The flight was operated by the El-Al subsidiary Sun d’Or. It departed Ben Gurion International Airport at 0715 GMT.
It may be recalled that direct flights have been in operation between Tel Aviv and Cairo since 1979, ever since Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace accord with Israel. Of late, the two countries have enhanced their economic and diplomatic relations.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has twice visited Egypt after coming to power in June. As late as last September, he met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in September. In early October, an aircraft of EgyptAir, carrying its flag, landed in Israel for the first time, a flight described as “historic” by the Israel Airport Authority. Earlier, Egyptian flights to Israel had been operated by an EgyptAir subsidiary, Air Sinai. That was set up exclusively for the Israeli route and without displaying the Egyptian flag on the exterior of its planes. Some in Egypt are still opposing relations with Israel.
Egypt and Jordan were the only Arab governments to have normalized relations with Israel till 2020. During that year itself, they were joined by Bahrain, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates. These countries also will now operate direct flights to the Jewish state
