Strategic Agreement Strengthens Company’s Position in African Offshore Gas Market
Technip Energies has announced the signing of a major contract, estimated to be worth between €250 million and €500 million, for the initial engineering and project management phases of a new floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility to be located off the coast of Africa. While the exact location of the project remains undisclosed, the agreement marks a significant move in bolstering Technip Energies’ presence in the African energy sector, particularly within offshore natural gas development.
This contract covers the front-end engineering design (FEED) and early project planning activities, laying the groundwork for a potential full-scale development. According to the company, the current agreement will remain in place until 30 September 2023, and may lead to additional contracts as the project progresses into its execution phase.
FLNG technology allows for the extraction, liquefaction, storage, and offloading of natural gas entirely at sea, removing the need for costly onshore infrastructure. This is especially valuable for accessing remote or “stranded” gas fields that are otherwise uneconomical to develop. The technology enables gas to be processed and shipped directly from offshore locations, improving flexibility and reducing environmental and logistical challenges.
Technip Energies has a well-established track record in delivering complex FLNG solutions. The company has previously led major projects such as PFLNG SATU in Malaysia, Prelude FLNG in Australia—which remains the largest FLNG facility globally—and Coral Sul FLNG in Mozambique. These projects have collectively added more than 8.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG capacity to the global energy market, with Coral Sul marking a major milestone in African deepwater LNG development.
The global FLNG market is gaining traction as countries and companies look for more adaptable and cleaner energy solutions during the ongoing energy transition. Africa, home to vast but underutilized natural gas reserves, has emerged as a focal point for FLNG expansion. Mozambique, in particular, has become a regional leader, with the successful launch of the Coral Sul FLNG project in the Rovuma Basin, a development in which Technip Energies played a leading role.

While Technip Energies is increasingly investing in low-carbon technologies—such as renewable hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, and decarbonisation solutions—this latest FLNG contract underscores the continued relevance of natural gas in securing global energy supplies. The flexibility and lower emissions of FLNG make it an essential part of the broader strategy to ensure energy availability while supporting economic development, especially across the African continent.
