The Eastern and Southern African Trade and Development Bank (TDB) is donating 160,000 Made-in-Ethiopia masks to Ethiopian healthcare workers to fight against Covid-19.  Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health is also actively involved in the project.

TDB sourced the masks from various units manufacturing healthcare devices including Everest Apparel Ethiopia S.C and Everest Textiles’ garment factory in Hawassa Industrial Park, Hawassa, Ethiopia. This has helped these units, which are employing   more than 2,000 workers, most of which are youths to stay in business.

Help from TDB was critical for many manufacturing units to stay in business during the Covid-19, when the business confidence was at the lowest ebb. These interventions also helped in generating businesses particularly to SME sector. TDB feels that these measures would help the textile industry in Ethiopia and apparel manufacturing. The Bank is implementing similar programs in 20 member states as a part of CERP, spending over US$ 500 million, which was extended to the Africa Union’s Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). There are many other development programs TDB is undertaking in the continent.
