The process of converting the TAZAMA pipeline from a conduit conveying commingled feedstock for the refinery to one carrying finished product (diesel) is almost completed stated the Minister of Energy Peter Chibwe Kapala.

The converted system will pump diesel from Dar es Salaam to Ndola using the older and smaller pipe while the newer bigger-gauge pipe will pump finished products to the Mpika terminal for uptake by tankers. The Government plans to expand the storage facilities and increase pumping and loading gantries at Mpika for better and more efficient conveyance. The diesel to be offloaded at Ndola and Mpika shall be transported to parts of Zambia by tankers. The operationalisation of the TAZAMA Pipeline will reduce the pump price of diesel and transportation costs substantially.

The government is also working on reducing pump prices of both petrol and diesel by introducing bulk purchases of petroleum products. Currently, the procurement is disaggregated and this doesn’t help the consumer in many ways, stated Kapala.
