Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi of Tanzania has been elected as the next World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, winning a five-year term from 2025 to 2030. The veteran cardiologist secured 32 votes, outpacing candidates from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, and Togo.

The announcement was made in Geneva by Liberia’s Health Minister, Dr. Louise Mapleh Kpoto. Janabi’s nomination, expected to be ratified by the WHO executive board, follows the untimely death of his compatriot, Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, who was elected but passed away before assuming office.

Janabi’s candidacy, endorsed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, was bolstered by a vigorous diplomatic campaign, including the involvement of former President Jakaya Kikwete as a special envoy. President Samia praised Janabi’s deep experience in the health sector and expressed confidence in his leadership.
