Tanzania’s government signed on October 22 a port management deal with Dubai-based DP World, which has caused some flutter among the opposition parties.  The deal was signed in the presence of Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com recently. She is hopeful the deals would boost exchanges with landlocked neighboring countries and reduce unloading times at the country’s largest port.

The DP World, based in the United Arab Emirates, will only operate four berths of the Dar es Salaam Port and not the entire port.  The performance of the contractual obligation will be reviewed every five years. However, this decision did not go well with the opposition parties, which maintain that the government’s decision should be reviewed since foreign companies should not be allowed to operate in the logistics sector.

The argument put forward by the port authority is that it would improve the efficiency of the port and can effectively compete with Kenya’s Mombasa Port, which has embarked on a modernization drive to attract more cargo shipping lines to berth there. The ports agreement was approved by Tanzania’s parliament on June 10.

During the subsequent protests, more than 20 people have been arrested so far. Amnesty International in August urged Tanzania to respect freedom of expression and the right to protest. It goes to the credit of the East African country and its president since the death in 2021 of former President Magufuli, who cracked down on critics and introduced draconian laws, several reform measures have been introduced by the present incumbent to allow freedom of expression. Her predecessor ruled the country with an iron fist. Her effort to allow democratic institutions to grow roots in the country is getting international recognition.
