Tanzania’s coffee production increased by over 20 percent this season 2022-23 touching 81,500 tons as against 66,605 tons in 2021-22.  The highest production so far registered for coffee was around 72,000 tonnes in 2020-21.

The Tanzania Coffee Board (TCB) said that the production surpassed the 2022-23 season target by 16 per cent. The target was to harvest 70,000 tonnes.

The Board also revealed that those who had abandoned coffee cultivation have resumed farming.  New coffee farmers continue to emerge in different areas of the country which are suitable for coffee cultivation. In this season that ended recently, 37,909 tonnes or  46.5 percent of the coffee beans harvested in the country were Arabica coffee and 43,589 tons were Robusta coffee. Tanzania earned US$231 million compared to US$206.23 million in the previous 2021-22 season.

The increase in production was largely due to the distribution of free coffee seedlings to farmers.  A total of 9.3 million coffee seedlings were distributed to farmers in the just-ended season and set a goal of 11 million seedlings in the next season which starts in September. The government also paid the farmers their dues on time.
