Tanzanian is on a poll mode. The process of electing the next president has begun on Wednesday. John Magufuli, the present incumbent, is contesting the election and he is facing the main opponent Tundu Lissu.
In Zanzibar, the situation had become tense in the recent days with the arrest of a candidate since there was an accusation from his party sources that security forces had killed 10 people.
Tundu Lissu is accusing the government of using dirty tricks to curtail his campaigns. Lissu said that the current regime was using every instrument of power to thwart his election campaign. Meanwhile, dozens of opposition parliamentary candidates were
disqualified from running in the elections for president and members of parliament, which take place on October 28 on one pretext or the other.
There are 15 candidates running for the presidential election. Among them include Mr. Magufuli, 60 years old, from the green and yellow colors of the party CCM power since 1961, and Tundu Lissu, 52 years old, on behalf of Chadema (Party for Democracy and Progress).
President John Magufuli is widely expected to win a second term.
During his first term in office, Magufuli has tried to take the country to a more development paradigm. He has critics also who tell that after assuming the office of president in 2015, he had become authoritarian, which his supporters deny. Many predict that the forthcoming election will be keenly contested.
