Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is traveling to Nairobi for a two-day State visit.  Earlier,  Suluhu made her first trip as President to Uganda on April 11 to sign major oil deals with President Yoweri Museveni and oil major Total. She will also address the joint session of Kenya’s parliament.  She was invited by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and  visit comes five years after her predecessor, the late John Magufuli, made a similar visit to Uganda.

The bilateral relations between the two countries are marked by protracted disputes over trade issues.  Kenya banned liquefied petroleum gas from Tanzania.  Dar es Salam retaliated by blocking Kenyan milk and its products, and cigarettes.

It is expected that the visit would pave the way for a better relation between the two countries. Of late, the two countries failed to reach an agreement on Covid-19 protocols for cross-border movement of goods, fearing transmission of the virus. The diplomatic relations further affected when the previous president of Tanzania Magufuli skipped the video-conference between East African Community (EAC) heads of state and governments on 12 May 2020. The consultative video-conference was meant to assess the development of Covid-19 in the region in a bid to develop a regional approach.
