Saniniu Laizer, a Tanzanian miner, has struck with a fortune when he mined out a diamond weighing over 6 kgs and is reportedly valued at US$ 2 million. The miner was also credited with the discovery of two large stones earlier, which he sold for a fortune. The description of the stone is unique. Called as Tanzanite, the stone is a blue and violet variety of the mineral Zoisite. This type of stone is found only in the northern part of Tanzania.
The interesting account is that Laizer is a philanthropist and is keen to use the proceeds from the sale of the diamond to help local people. He has already set up two schools for children from the economically backward segment with the money received from mining. Yet, the identity of Laizer should be clearly understood. He is a small time miner and operate under licenses acquired from the government. In Tanzania illegal mining of the mineral is a headache both for the government and large miners. Such illegal operations exist close to major mining operations. The miner from the East African country is known for his Spartan life and made it clear that he would not celebrate the discovery of the stone with pomp and show. He is also having a cattle wealth of nearly 2000, which he tends very carefully. Maintaining large number of cattle is a sign of prosperity woven in tradition in many parts of Africa.
Tanzanite is considered to be one of the world’s rarest precious stones and is known for its intrinsic qualities. Discovered in 1967, the gemstone is used in necklaces, bracelets, earrings and ornaments. Tanzanite deposit of commercial importance is found in northern Tanzania. The mines are all located in Merelani Hills, near the base of Mount Kilimanjaro and the city of Arusha, which extends over only eight kilometer in area. Tanzanite was designated as a modern birthstone.
