Tanzanian government mulls hiking its stake in companies

·       The past few years have witnessed  a rise in dividends and other contributions by companies in which the Tanzanian government has a stake

·       Tanzanian government is in the process of finalising plans to increase its stake in some more companies.

·       Some of the companies under review are Udart, Keko Pharmaceutical Industries  and Mecco Construction Company.

Various initiatives undertaken by the government in the past few years have led to a rise in dividends and other contributions by companies in which theTanzanian government has a stake. In 2014/15 financial year the government received Sh161.04 billion in the form of dividends from companies and revenue-generating public institutions. The collection rose to Sh1.05 trillion in the 2018/19 financial year.

Encouraged by this trend, the Tanzanian government is in the process of finalising  plans to increase its stake in some more companies. Some of the companies under review are  Udart, Keko Pharmaceutical Industries  and Mecco Construction Company.

Udart that operates the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Dar es Salaam –  has a 49 percent stake by the government. The government now proposes to raise it to 85 percent. In Keko Pharmaceutical Industries, the government wants to raise its stake from the current 40
