Tanzania has penetrated the cashew nut market of the United States.  An eight-tonne air cargo of processed cashew nuts to New Orleans, Louisiana was sent this week. The consignment was exported by Ward Holdings Tanzania Limited (WTH), a subsidiary of Ward Holdings International, a Michigan-based global market development and investment company.

The Agriculture Deputy Minister, Mr Anthony Mavunde said that the export is a welcome development for the Tanzanian Government that targets to have 60 percent of Tanzania’s cashew nuts locally processed by 2025. The initiative is expected to increase new industries creating local employment. It is hoped that the shipment will lead to more exports to the US.

WHT President, Mr Godfrey Simbeye, described the development as a historical moment and called it a win-win formula for Tanzanian farmers and American consumers. He informed us that future Tanzanian cashew nut shipments will enter the US through New Orleans.  Dar es Salaam and New Orleans had recently signed sister city partner and bilateral trade agreements, that will facilitate the business relationship.
