Tanzanian Airlines Set to Resume European Flights Following EU Regulatory Clearance

(3 Minutes Read)

Tanzania is poised to re-establish direct air links with Europe after addressing safety oversight concerns raised by the European Union. The move comes after the EU’s decision in June 2025 to add all Tanzanian-certified airlines to its Air Safety List—not due to technical issues or aircraft deficiencies, but as a result of broader regulatory and oversight shortcomings in the country’s aviation governance.

Leading the return will be Air Tanzania, the national carrier, which is preparing to relaunch its European routes. This decision follows months of collaborative efforts between Tanzanian aviation authorities and EU regulators to align Tanzania’s aviation oversight systems with European safety standards. The process included technical reviews, policy updates, and the implementation of more stringent compliance measures, ultimately leading to the lifting of the EU’s restrictions.

Air Tanzania currently operates flights to regional and intercontinental destinations such as Kenya, India, and China, and is now planning to expand its route network to include major European hubs. Government and airline officials have reassured the public and international partners that the airline’s fleet is predominantly modern, well-serviced, and compliant with international maintenance standards. The EU’s previous concerns were largely administrative and legal in nature, focusing on the harmonisation of air traffic control laws and safety oversight frameworks.

The reinstatement of Tanzanian airlines to European skies is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the nation’s economy, particularly in the sectors of international trade, tourism, and business connectivity. With Europe being a key market for Tanzanian exports and a major source of tourists, the resumption of direct flights is anticipated to drive growth and improve the country’s global integration.

Overall, this milestone represents a significant advancement in Tanzania’s aviation sector, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and strengthening its position as a regional air transport hub.
