President Samia Suluhu Hassan has unveiled the government’s ambitious agenda for agricultural reform aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency, which will subsequently position Tanzania as a regional food hub. The Head of State revealed this at a roundtable in Des Moines, USA, highlighting three primary goals to be achieved following her recent mission in Dakar, Senegal.
According to the President, the country’s first objective is to ensure Tanzania’s food self-sufficiency, which involves boosting agricultural productivity and maintaining the quality, accessibility, and affordability of food produced.
In addition, the country’s key initiative is focused on food storage and processing, aiming to minimize post-harvest losses, including value addition through processing. The third goal aims to position Tanzania as a “food basket” for East Africa and potentially Southern Africa.

President Samia expressed optimism that the country will accomplish these goals, as she emphasized, “We haven’t reached the target yet, but I assure you, we are on track.” To ensure the country’s ambition is fulfilled, she noted that Tanzania has established the Presidential Advisory Agricultural Council, a body formed in response to directives set at the Dakar conference. The council is doing a good job of advising the government on how to enhance Tanzania’s impact on food delivery and food security, stated the President.
