TANZANIA Ports Authority (TPA) has expressed its willingness to handle South Sudan consignments through the Dar es Salaam Port subject to the support from relevant institutions and supporting infrastructures. According to TPA’s Deputy Director General, MrKarim Mataka, the improved performance of Dar Port has attracted more foreign customers including traders from South Sudan who are interested in using the facilities.

The proposal is to transport the freight to South Sudan through the central line railway to the shores of Lake Victoria. Later it will be transported through a cargo ship to Port Bell in Uganda and then by road to the final destinations.

Mr Mataka revealed that the government has formed a high level committee to review the issues faced by transport to and from different seaports. The committee would place recommendations before the government on how to improve   local and foreign cargo handling, including that of South Sudan. He suggested that a combination of a fast working railway system and cargo ferry/ship on Lake Victoria, could enable handling of more cargo to South Sudan through Uganda.
