Tanzania- Earnings from maize exports jumped by 234 percent

According to the official statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Tanzania, the export earnings from Maize in the first eight months of this year recorded a 234 percent growth. The country earned Sh325 billion from maize exports from January to August this year against Sh97.55 billion during the corresponding period in 2021.

 

Factors that helped the quantum leap in export earnings are a 96 percent increase in export volumes, supported by a 70.6 percent increase in the unit price.

Agriculture minister Hussein Bashe stated that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government had taken proactive steps in strengthening irrigation and improving seed multiplication, which also contributed to the enhanced output.

 

According to the 2022 data from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the top importers of Tanzanian maize included Kenya which imported 152,449 tonnes of maize from Tanzania followed by South Sudan, which shipped in 8,000 tonnes. The other major importers of maize from Tanzania are Rwanda (13,097 tonnes), Sudan (5,000 tonnes), United Arab Emirates (2,940 tonnes), the Democratic Republic of Congo (2,426 tonnes), Burundi (1,828 tonnes) and Uganda (1,175 tonnes).

To improve access to markets, the ministry proposes to undertake the construction of modern warehouses for crop storage, and renovate the existing ones, as well as improve aflatoxin prevention measures.
