Tanzania is making bold strides to modernise its energy sector, reaffirming its commitment to technological advancement and strategic international cooperation. With a focus on harnessing its vast oil and gas reserves, the country is aligning its development goals with global innovation trends, positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s evolving energy landscape.

Speaking at the Africa Technology Conference in Dar es Salaam, Charles Sangweni, Director General of the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), revealed that Tanzania is embracing cutting-edge digital and engineering technologies to enhance upstream petroleum exploration and development. Addressing a global audience of energy professionals, Sangweni emphasised the government’s proactive stance in modernising the industry and driving investment.

A central feature of Tanzania’s energy strategy is the opening of 23 petroleum exploration blocks, now available for investment. Sangweni invited both regional and international stakeholders to participate in what he described as a “transformative phase of energy development,” signalling Tanzania’s intent to become a regional energy powerhouse in East Africa.

To strengthen technical capacity and promote sustainable practices, the government is engaging with global professional associations such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers. These collaborations aim to boost knowledge transfer, improve technical competencies, and foster environmentally responsible development.

With an estimated 57.54 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of recoverable natural gas—47 tcf offshore and over 10 tcf onshore—Tanzania holds one of sub-Saharan Africa’s most significant reserves. These figures, validated by both PURA and independent analysts, underscore the country’s strategic importance in the region’s energy ecosystem.

Held under the theme “Navigating the Future: Building Technological Excellence for Sustainable Energy in Africa,” the Africa Technology Conference brought together stakeholders from across the continent and beyond. It provided a forum for exploring the role of innovation in achieving sustainable, inclusive energy growth.
