Support for evicting people who have migrated to Mayotte, a French-administered island off Comoros is coming.  A demonstration of over 1000 people living on the island was taken out to lend support to the authorities to continue with eviction and demolition of shanties, spread across the island. They renewed their support for the security operation, titled “Wuambushu” conducted by the authorities on the French archipelago of Mayotte, demanding a halt to crime and illegal immigration.

Mamoudzou has the largest slum in France creating sanitary and ecological insecurity, said the people are supporting the eviction.  Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has launched a series of operations, under the name of Wuanbushu aimed at removing illegal migrants, mostly from neighbouring Comoros, as reported by www.trendsmafrica.com from time to time.   The migrants who constitute half of the estimated 350,000 inhabitants of Mayotte, do not have French nationality.

Delinquency and crime are rampant in the archipelago. However, a large section of the people on the island considers eviction as brutal and anti-poor. They have the support of many organizations both within the archipelago and outside.  The eviction operations are taking place despite the justice system having suspended the demolition of a shantytown.  The evictions are hampered by the suspension until further notice, which the authorities maintain that they will go in appeal against the order.
