  • Continuing Russia-Ukraine war would pose serious problems to Sudan and other African countries since close to 87% of world’s food grain requirements of wheat and barley are meet by Russia and Ukraine

The war between Ukraine and Russia is affecting Sudan, according to NGO Save the Children. The conflict is affecting export of wheat and other food grains from Russia and Ukraine, two destinations which supply food grains, particularly wheat to the UN aid agencies. According to experts, over 20 million people would be food insecure because  of the conflict. That is almost half of the population of the country.

Almost 87% of the wheat for Sudan comes from Russia and Ukraine. The conflict has caused world prices to soar beyond the records set in 2008. The UN agencies maintain that in the midst of spiralling inflation and large scale food scarcity, the prices of bread had zoomed over 250% in the recent days so much so  one in three Sudanese is already in need of humanitarian aid.

The military takeover of Sudan was another blow to the impoverished country. International political or economic support stopped. The state lost 40% of its revenue as the World Bank suspended two billion dollars in aid. The United States suspended US$700 million aid to the North African country. Washington had sent 300,000 tonnes of wheat in 2021. Also, it promised to send the 400,000 tonnes promised in 2022. Now, that would not fructify pushing the country into abject poverty.
