As a protest against the poor economic conditions and lack of political will, members of the Beja Tribe blocked roads and forced Red Sea ports to close. The forced closure of the Port due to political protests has hit the availability of essential items like essential medicine, fuel, and wheat in the country according to official sources.

In a statement, the cabinet endorsed the right of eastern Sudan to peaceful protest but reminded that the closure of Port and highways connecting the rest of the country was harming the entire population. Last month the protestors forced the shutting down of two main oil pipelines, including the only one transporting fuel to the capital Khartoum.

The grievance of the Beja minority is that their interests have been ignored by the transitional government. They allege that the peace agreement signed by the transitional government in October 2020 overlooked their interests. The closure of the port has cost the government heavily leading to the filing of a lawsuit against the Beja nazirs leaders. The accusations include undermining civil state authority, threatening the transitional period, invoking hatred, violence, and tribalism, and disrupting the national economy.
