Sudan is for striking an interim deal with Ethiopia over its Nile dam by putting riders like assurance of further talks, Sudan’s water minister said yesterday (Monday). Reports indicate that Sudan may accept an interim agreement based on certain conditions which include signing on all the terms that have been already agreed. It also insists that the negotiations should continue and should be concluded within a given timeframe.
The report also says that three countries had already “reached consensus” over most technical matters but failed to reach a binding deal. The African Union (AU) sponsored negotiations had taken place in Kinshasa in April, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com , Ethiopia had announced earlier that it reached its first target of filling the dam last year. It also said that it would go ahead with the plan in July with or without a deal. Egypt, which depends on the Nile for about 97 percent of its irrigation and drinking water, thinks that the dam as an existential threat to it. Sudan hopes the project will regulate annual flooding. However, it fears its own dams would be harmed without agreement on its operation.
