Sudan and Israel strike new pathways to strengthen bilateral relations

Sudan’s military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen recently and announced a future peace agreement, indicating a new pathway between the two countries to normalize their relations

Sudan’s military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen recently and announced a future peace agreement, indicating a new pathway between the two countries to normalize their relations.

Israel Foreign Minister Cohen said he expected relations to be formalised by the end of the year. However, he insisted that the formalization of relations would be after Sudan appointed a civilian government. Israel is keen to have good -relations with Muslim-dominated Sudan, an  Arab nation because of its strategic importance.

It may be recalled that Khartoum in January 2021 formally agreed to normalise relations with Israel in a quid pro quo for the USA removing it from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. That initiative was taken at the behest of former US President Donald Trump. Morocco also agreed to normalize relations with Israel because of its trading interests. There are a good number of jews in Morocco, who want to maintain good relations with Israel, besides having growing trading and investment interests.
