Subsea cable to double internet speed in Togo

·       A joint press release by the Togolese government and Google, said the “Equiano” cable, would offer  high-speed and affordable internet access to millions of people in Togo as well as the West Africa region.

Togo is poised to get a high speed interconnection soon, Google said in a statement. The Equiano cable, a subsea cable owned by Google and the first of its kind to reach Africa has arrived in the country. This is part of a multi-year project to provide cheaper access to users across the continent. Togo President Faure Gnassingbe inaugurated the cable in the capital Lomé which is expected to start operating by the end of the year.

.Google has launched a$1 billion programme to build digital capacity on the continent. The new line will also make way into Nigeria, Namibia and South Africa, and branch out offering connections to nearby countries.

Sub-Saharan Africa is rated as the world’s lowest-connected region. GSMA Intelligence report 2020 estimated that almost a quarter of the Sub- Saharan population had no access to mobile broadband coverage compared to 7 percent globally.
