Strategic Importance of Nigeria-Morocco Pipeline

(3 Minutes Read)

The pipeline is designed to transport 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually and is 5,660 km long. The project aims to benefit 16 West African countries, promoting regional economic integration and socio-economic development, as well as increasing energy security in Africa and Europe.

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project (5,660 km, USD 25 billion) perfectly illustrates a strategy. Actively supported by Washington, this mega-project serves several strategic goals: reducing Europe’s dependence on Russian gas, countering Chinese advances, with the Jingye Group already supplying construction materials, and bolstering American influence.

The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project aims to transport natural gas from Nigeria to Morocco and potentially Europe, diversifying energy sources and boosting economic development in West Africa and beyond.

The project, with a proposed capacity of 30 billion cubic meters per year and a length of 5,660 km, is expected to benefit over 340 million people. Tenders for the Moroccan section of the pipeline are planned to begin in 2025, with a private company to oversee construction, operation, and maintenance.

Key aspects of the project include providing a new supply of natural gas to Morocco and eventually Europe, diversifying energy sources, and reducing reliance on traditional sources. The pipeline will run from Nigeria through 13 African countries (including Mauritania, Senegal, and others), ultimately connecting to the Morocco-Europe Gas Pipeline.
