Tropical storm- Ana- has killed at least 34 people in Madagascar and three people in Mozambique. It has also affected ordinary life in Malawi, according to reports coming out from these countries.
The storm first hit the east coast of Africa’s largest island Madagascar. It has caused heavy rains, flooding and mudslides in the capital Antananarivo. The latest report from Madagascar showed that 34 people have died and nearly 65,000 have been left homeless since last week. Several low-lying districts of the capital remain under high alert. Emergency evacuations were launched overnight.
The storm lashed at mainland Africa last Monday bringing heavy rains and strong winds in Mozambique’s central and northern districts. Three people were killed, with at least 66 injured. The storm also caused heavy damages to buildings and properties, according to the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management. The UN forecast is that the storm will cause widespread flooding, uproot people and damage infrastructure. Vulnerable people in the affected areas are being identified for rehabilitation works including evacuation to safer places. The UN agencies estimate that 500,000 people may be impacted in Mozambique’s Nampula, Zambezia and Sofala provinces.
In neighboring Malawi, the storm plunged most parts of the country into darkness overnight on Monday after flash floods raised the water levels. The electricity was shut down in many places and public life was affected in the areas where there was heavy rains and storm.
