The country’s imports of $8.2 billion recorded a growth of 6.5 percent in the first eight months of 2022. During the same period in 2021, the imports were $7.7 billion during the same period last year.
Palm oil topped the list of food imports of $989.5 million, followed by frozen meat with $958.5 million recording a growth of 26.1 percent and 52.7 percent, respectively.
The other food products that recorded sharp increases are concentrated milk by 31.5 percent ($198 million), tuna by 34.9 percent ($193.9 million), cow livers by 5.9 percent ($143.3 million), and baby formula by 2.5 percent ($73.9 million).
Egypt is one of the world’s biggest importers of wheat, mostly sourcing grain from Russia and Ukraine. Recently there were reports that the country is planning to source supplies from India. It is also the world’s top importer of Sunflower oil.

The Russia-Ukraine war that started in 2022, pushed Egypt’s food security into a crisis to its economy as its agricultural sector is unable to produce enough cereal grains, especially wheat, and oilseeds to meet even half of the country’s domestic demand. The country heavily subsidizes bread and vegetable oils for its citizens.
