State-owned radio South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) has reported that discussions were held between South Sudan petroleum minister Daniel Awow Chuang, and his Kenyan counterpart John Munyes to boost cooperation in the areas of oil infrastructure development and experience sharing. Chuang was quoted as saying that Kenya’s partnership with South Sudan, Uganda and probably DRC will facilitate channelising crude oil from Kenyan oilfields to the international market. The discussions also explored the possibilities to build a joint pipeline to Kenya’s coast by countries in the east African region.
South Sudan signed an agreement with its neighbour Kenya In 2012, to build an oil pipeline to connect the conflict-torn country to the Kenyan port of Lamu in a bid to reduce its excessive dependence on its northern neighbor, Sudan, for its oil export. The pipeline is expected to transport between 700,000 barrels and 1 million barrels of x crude per day from South Sudan. At an estimated cost of 3 billion U.S. dollars, the project is yet to start.
Kenya, is a newcomer in the oil business. It announced last week its first-ever oil export of 200,000 barrels since the discovery of crude oil in 2012.
