Egypt imports a considerable amount of foodstuffs like soybeans and corn to maintain its food supply. The country is also on the lookout for reliable partners to meet the demand. Egypt is exploring partnerships with South Dakota and Iowa in this direction. Some amount of progress has been made on a possible trade agreement that could boost the state’s agricultural economy.
State Rep. Michael Saba, who is facilitating the talks, revealed that Egyptian Ambassador Hamdi Saleh was in South Dakota in November as part of the talks. It is hoped that the agreement will be finalised after COVID-19 pandemic subsides. Mr Saba welcomed the discussion and stated that such a deal will be a support to South Dakota farmers, who were adversely affected by the US-China trade war last year. Ambassador Saleh said that food security was high priority on Egypt’s agenda, and efforts were on to work out a mutually beneficial partnership.
