In 2024, South Africa’s telecommunications sector experienced an 11.7% increase in revenue, climbing from ZAR 208.29 billion in 2023 to ZAR 232.67 billion, according to the latest figures from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
This growth was mainly driven by a 10.21% rise in mobile services revenue, which reached ZAR 132.38 billion.
During the same year, mobile cellular subscriptions grew by 7.46%, totaling an impressive 116.8 million. Smartphone subscriptions also saw significant growth, increasing by 10.36% to 82.7 million. This strong performance indicates a robust recovery and ongoing expansion, fuelled by rising demand for mobile data, improved internet access, and increased investment in digital infrastructure.
Mobile services revenue rose by 10.21%, with mobile data services growing by 6.86%. However, revenue from voice services declined by 7.70%, continuing its downward trend. In contrast, revenue from text and multimedia messaging services grew by 20.45%, while outbound roaming revenue dropped by 38.69%.
Revenue from fixed internet and data services surged by 14.62%, reflecting a growing demand for broadband as more households and businesses embraced digital tools for remote work, online learning, and streaming.

Key players like Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom continued to invest in expanding their 4G and 5G networks, helping to close the digital gap. With its digital economy advancing, South Africa’s telecom sector is positioned for sustained growth driven by innovation, greater affordability, and enhanced nationwide connectivity.
