South Africa’s leading political party ANC vows to fight corruption, inflation, unemployment and power shortage

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has flagged the country’s fight against corruption and the untiring effort to put on rail the economy, which has been passing through a difficult trajectory for quite some time.

At the  ruling African National Congress party’s conference, the president said that  the measures were being taken to grow and transform the economy relying  on a fiscal policy. The aim, he said, was to ensure that the national debt was brought   to the sustainable level and the government spending  re-prioritized. The discussions at the ANC’s conference have touched upon challenges like unemployment, high levels of poverty and inflation. The unemployment rate is at a record high at 35% and the inflation is ruling at over 7%. The price rise was mostly on account of higher food prices. The conference also took stock of the prevailing power situation in the country, wherein frequent shutdowns of power plants is common. This has affected businesses and households as the power utility Eskom struggles to keep the lights on.

Close to 2000 delegates from different parts of reh country  attended the conference, which was a preview to its elective conference to be held in December. During the important December conference, the party will   elect new leaders. Ramaphosa will also seek his re-election as ANC’s leader at the mega conference.  In his address,

The delegates expressed support for the steps the government took to address those issues. They also endorsed the party’s approach of step-aside policy, which required leaders accused of corruption to step down from their positions.  Reports suggest that the overwhelming view of the conference was the retention of the step-aside conditions, to enhance the integrity of the movement and its leadership.
