There is widespread concern about the slow pace and growing apathy towards vaccination in South Africa. Though the target of the vaccination is 300,000+ per day, currently the vaccination rates are far below the desired rate. To meet the national vaccination target in December, South Africa will need to introduce a combination of mandatory vaccine policies and incentives, recommends Business for South Africa (B4SA) an alliance of volunteers working with the South African government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Martin Kingston, chair of the B4SA Steering Committee said that such a strategy would be necessary to reduce the impact of a possible fourth wave of Covid-19 cases in December. To ensure full vaccination before December, the first jab should be administered by October 20, which he said looked unlikely. It has been also noted that there seems to be a growing apathy towards the vaccination. It appears that in Gauteng, a million people had not returned to get their second jab.
