Residents of South Africa’s Gauteng Province are decrying the poor state of the roads in Gauteng Province. The province has over twenty-one thousand potholes on the roads, which are creating fear among vehicle owners and public.
In Johannesburg, people have started taking things into their own hands by launching self initiatives. People and resident associations are running parallel government services.
The launch of Smart Mobility Weekends has helped in focusing the plight of the roads. The Municipal Workers Union, which is responsible for the maintenance of the roads, is at loggerheads with local governments over salary increases.
The threat of a strike action also would derail the department’s self-imposed six months deadline to deal with all road developments. People complain that road taxes have been rising while the services remain sluggish.
