The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), claims that South Africa is among several countries targeted for hacking campaigns by Russia. The hacking aims at disrupting energy companies and critical infrastructure. The US sources report that a sophisticated attempt to target and hack persistent access to the networks of critical infrastructure and energy companies worldwide is planned by Russia. FBI alleges that the Russian government aims to disrupt and damage such systems.
In response to questions on its security, South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility, Eskom, they are aware of the threat and assured that cyber security team and tools will assist them with combatting attempted attacks.The alleged attacks of Russia are coming in the wake of South Africa taking a neutral stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In a statement issued, South Africa also highlighted the 30 years of diplomatic ties with South Africa, stretching back to 1992.
It said: “Our countries have been walking together on the path of mutual understanding, respect and friendship… With the rich history of bilateral ties that we already have, we are ready to expand this legacy further, and explore new ways and areas of cooperation for the benefit of our nations.”
There were recent reports that Gazprombank, owned by Russia’s state-owned gas supplier, was considering a bid for a multibillion-rand contract in the liquified natural gas (LNG) sector. The project is expected to secure LNG for various gas-to-power projects planned for the Coega special economic zone in the Eastern Cape.
