South African health minister has announced that by next month, COVID-19 vaccines will be procured for its population. A second wave of Covid-19 cases has swept over South Africa and the South African government has been criticised over the delay in starting a road map for inoculation against Covid-19.

Addressing a news conference, Dr Zweli Mkhize said that the government is targeting February for launching the vaccination. He added that the government’s negotiations and with vaccine manufacturers like Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca, as well as with Russian and Chinese laboratories are nearing closure.

The government proposes to approach the private sector as well as the country’s main health insurers for funding. The country is also participating in Covax, the World Health Organisation’s mechanism for global vaccine distribution.
