South Africa’s State power utility Eskom is struggling with the shortage of generation capacity at its power stations. As a result, South Africans will continue to face load shedding. They have been facing load shedding from about 5pm to 10pm daily as Eskom has been battling breakdowns and the irregular service of some of its generation units for the past two weeks. The planned and unplanned outages was caused due to unavailability of about 18 000MW of capacity.
In a statement, Eskom appealed to all South Africans to limit the impact of load shedding by cutting down the usage of electricity and to switch off all non-essential items.

Mo Ibrahim Foundation’s latest report- The 2022 Forum Facts & Figures, ‘The Road to COP27: Making Africa’s Case in the Climate Debate’, vindicates Africa’s specific position within the global debate on climate change by providing a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and prospects of the global climate crisis from Africa’s perspective.
Defending the report, Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, said that though Africa as the least industrialized continent contributed the least to the global climate crisis, its share of suffering due to its consequences is the highest.
The report argued that Africa accounted for only 3.3% of total global carbon emissions since 1960 with per capita carbon emissions ten times lower than North America in 2020.Yet, Africa is hit hard by the impact of climate change. Between 2010-2022, the number of people affected by droughts amounted to about 172.3 million, while those affected by floods were about 43.0 million. The continent is home to the ten most climate vulnerable countries globally accounting for 20.1% of the continent’s population. The report highlighted that with the already existing developmental challenges in the continent, climate challenge could push another 39.7 million additional people in sub-Saharan Africa into extreme poverty.
The report highlighted Africa’s consistent resource potential, with the continent possessing all the key assets to accelerate the global transition to a green and sustainable economy. Africa accounts for 30% of the world’s mineral reserves, that are key to building green or low-carbon technologies, such as energy storage and solar panels among others. The report called for urgent action to help Africa liberate from the natural resource curse, and focus on leveraging financial resources, strengthening governance frameworks and natural resource management.
