According to the Agricultural Business Chamber trade data of South Africa, agricultural exports for the third quarter were up by eight percent year on year basis to US$3.4 billion (R52bn), taking the country’s agriculture, food and beverages exports for the first three quarters of the year at US$9.6billon.
The basket of agricultural -products included citrus, maize, wine, apples and pears, nuts, sugar, fruit juices, and wool. The expectation is that some of these products would continue dominating the export list in the fourth quarter also. For the year 2020-21, South Africa’s agricultural output increased triggered by higher global demand. Higher global prices for agricultural products also helped in realizing higher values for exports.
The good news is that the encouraging export traction is still continuing. This could help South Africa surpass 2020’s agriculture exports of US$10.2billion, which was the second-highest on record. The expectation is that this could even pass the record exports of 2018, which was US$10.6 billion, according to reliable sources.
Africa and Asia are the largest markets for South Africa’s agricultural exports in the third quarter of this year. They accounted for 35 percent and 33 percent in value terms, respectively. The third highest destination for export was the European Union contributing 23 percent of South Africa’s agricultural exports. The rest of the exports -9 percent – were to the Americas and other regions of the world.
