President Cyril Ramaphosa has enacted the Preservation and Development of Agricultural Land Bill, a pivotal measure aimed at protecting South Africa’s prime agricultural areas. This law seeks to prevent valuable farmland from being repurposed for non-agricultural activities, such as housing and mining, thereby supporting sustainable food production and fostering economic growth. It establishes a structured regulatory framework to optimise the use of agricultural land, enhancing food security and supporting farming communities.

Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen praised the bill’s passage, noting its role in fostering a conducive environment for agriculture. He pointed out that the legislation aligns with the Department of Agriculture’s strategic goals, which include enhancing food security and creating jobs in the sector. The new law introduces a national framework to proactively preserve and develop agricultural land, ensuring it remains productive and protected from excessive fragmentation.

A notable aspect of the legislation is the establishment of an advisory committee with up to ten members, tasked with guiding the implementation of the Act and promoting sustainable agricultural development. Additionally, the law aims to prevent the fragmentation of farmland, support viable farming operations, and encourage the effective use of land resources. With less than 13% of South Africa’s 122 million hectares designated as high-potential agricultural land, this initiative is anticipated to strengthen food security and sustain the agricultural industry for future generations.
