The events business sector in South Africa, which used to rake in money and employment to many people  is likely to be opened up soon. The government representatives held a talk with representatives of event management companies recently (3 September) to discuss the conditions to be followed once the sector is opened up.

It is almost seven months that the country has banned live events as a part of the lockdown. This has led to loss of livelihood for many and the government, it seems, is keen to address this issue. Also, there is heavy pressure from the event management companies, who had seen their income to a naught.

The government officials met with the South African Communication Industries Association (SACIA), to discuss protocols to be followed once the sector is opened up.  It is understood that many options were discussed how to protect the workers and attendees to the events.

SACIA suggested stringent safety measures and protocols to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 at events organized by any of their affiliated member organizations. These include  prohibition of the consumption of alcohol at events with over 300 participants; a separate safety plan for 1,000 participants (drive-ins); usage of  technology such as electronic capacity monitoring systems to track how many participants are at events at any given time; etc.
