The National Coronavirus Command Council had imposed a second ban on the sale of alcohol in mid-July, citing pressure on the country’s health facilities. Last week President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the lifting of the ban in his address to the nation.
The new rules permit alcohol between 9am and 5pm at liquor stores from Monday to Thursday. Consumption of alcohol at restaurants and pubs would be permitted until 10pm.The South African Breweries has welcomed the announcement of lifting the alcohol ban from 17 th August and affirmed that it will help toward the economic recovery of the sector and also support efforts to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus by being vigilant and following to Covid-19 safety protocols.
Zoleka Lisa, the Vice President of Corporate Affairs at the brewery, said that lifting of the ban on the sale of alcohol will be a relief for business and industry, and the million livelihoods who depend on the liquor industry. She pointed out that one million livelihoods depended on the alcohol industry through and the value chain. She urged everybody to actively support the fight against the virus to ensure a sustainable and inclusive economic growth path.
