South Africa is in the grip of a new Covid-19 pandemic wave and has reported over 26,000 new cases on Saturday as against 24 000 the day before (Friday). The virus is reported to be a delta variant, according to the country’s health officials. It is also reported that 13,800 people are currently hospitalized for coronavirus-related complications.
Many hospital staff in the North West Province are struggling to cope up with the heavy load of virus infected patients. The death toll in the country has risen to over. 63,000. The unofficial figures indicate that fatalities may actually be over 170,000. Medical staff in various hospitals are availing the services of psychologists to cope up with their burnt out syndrome due to excessive pressure of work.
Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention put South Africa’s case load at 2 million, accounting for over 30% of the continent’s total reported caseload. The country has increased restrictions with the aim of reducing the further spread of coronavirus in the country. The nighttime curfew has been extended, the sale of alcohol banned, many schools have been closed and travel into and out of Gauteng, the epicenter of the new virus attack, has been restricted. Over 3.3 million of South Africa’s 60 million people have received at least one jab of the Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccines as of now.
