In one of the worst  natural disasters in recent history, more than 440 people have lost their lives in the devastating floods in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. Almost a hundred more are reported to be missing.

The floodwaters struck KwaZulu-Natal after the torrential rains that lashed the province last week. Most of the casualties were in Durban. More than 500 schools, hundreds of homes and scores of hospitals were destroyed. Search and relief aid operations are continuing in and around Durban, the city with a population of 3.5 million. The South African Weather Service has forecast that rainfall would clear by midweek.

The government has announced an immediate one billion rand ($68m) in emergency relief funding. Churches and other charitable organisations have also joined hands in relief operations.

South Africa so far was spared from similar natural disasters, though its neighbouring countries like Mozambique had faced cyclones. The destruction has added to the suffering of the people who were recovering from the losses caused by the pandemic and deadly riots last year that killed more than 350 people.
