South Africa is entering the luxury segment of olive oil to compete with countries like Greece, Italy, and Spain, which are considered undisputed kings. Tokara, lying somewhat closer to Cape Town,  is where the new crop has been experimented with, which is also a place where grapes for making popular wines are cultivated.

The region originally specialized in winemaking and is now a hub for growing high-quality olives. Now olive growers have formed an association of their own named SA Olive, which is doubling as a producers’ association as well. Interestingly, there are more than 120 olive producers in South Africa, mainly from the Western Cape region. In 2021, the average olive export price amounted to US$2,263 per ton. In recent years, table olive production outpaced imports for the first time. South Africa produced 1.5 million liters of extra virgin olive oil in 2020, although the latest figure is not known.  About 95% of local production qualifies as extra virgin.
