The South African justice ministry has issued a statement announcing that the Department of Justice and Correctional Services  has been informed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities that fugitives Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been arrested on june 7th.Both the countries are in the process of finalizing the  extradition of the accused to South Africa.Both Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been living in UAE for years,and this is the latest major development in extradition arrest by authorities in the United Arab Emirates.An Interpol international wanted person notice was issued  against Atul and Rajesh Gupta last July.

South Africa has been fighting for the arrest of  the three Indian-origin brothers and businessmen, Ajay, Atul and Rajesh Gupta for their alleged involvement in corruption during the Zuma era (2009-2018). The siblings used their intimacy with Zuma  to win lucrative public contracts.They were supposed to have high influence even in political matters, and participated in the management of state affairs, including the appointment of ministers. After a report exposing them as well as Zuma was published in 2016, a commission was set up in 2018 to investigate  the involvement of the Gupta family in widespread corruption during Zuma’s nine years in power.The report exposed Zuma and brought his downfall from power forcing Guptas to flee  from South Africa.

A damning report published in 2016 detailed how the siblings, who are close to Mr Zuma, won The Gupta brothers fled South Africa shortly after a commission was set up in 2018 to The cases contributed to Zuma’s downfall and he was forced to resign. Sentenced to jail in July for contempt of court and now on conditional release for health reasons, his corruption trial is still ongoing.
