South Africa expressed its readiness to host peace talks to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This follows an earlier announcement of proposed mediation of announcing an upcoming peace talk led by six leaders of African countries in Kyiv and Moscow
South Africa expressed its readiness to host peace talks to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This follows an earlier announcement of proposed mediation of an upcoming peace talk led by six leaders of African countries in Kyiv and Moscow. The proposed delegation, besides, South Africa includes heads of state of Congo-Brazzaville, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda. and Zambia.
President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke on the phone with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. Putin earlier welcomed the initiative of African heads of state. The Ukraine Head of State Volodymyr Zelensky also has given consent to the African initiative to have peace talks. It may be recalled that South Africa has refused to condemn Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine. It has maintained to remain neutral and favor a dialogue. This stand was criticized by the Western countries and was pointed out as Pretoria’s closeness to Russia. South Africa was also considered a poster boy of the Western countries. Yet, it has had a special relationship with Russia since the apartheid days. That is also true with other African countries.

The consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war have been severe on Africa. It manifested mostly as skyrocketing prices of cereals, disruptions in the movement of goods, and consequent scarcity of essential goods. Coming close on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russian-Ukraine war gave a jolt to the economic recovery process of many countries including African nations.
