South African government announced stringent measures to curb the third wave of coronavirus, such as extending the curfew hours, prohibition of  sale of alcohol  etc to curb the spread of the virus. Recently, there was a rise in infections threatening the health systems in several parts of the country.

Over the past week, the country has recorded an average of 7,500 daily infections and hospital admissions due to COVID-19. This is 59% higher than the preceding 14 days. The average number of people who die from COVID-19 each day has increased by 48% from 535 two weeks ago to 791 in the past seven days. There was also a high rise in the number of people admitted in the hospitals because of infection. The rise was about 59% over the past two weeks,

South Africa’s 7-day rolling average of daily new cases has nearly
doubled over the past two weeks. It was  f 6.69 new cases per 100,000 people on May 3 However, as of June 14, the average caseload 100,000 people was 14, says Johns Hopkins University’s Covid -19 monitoring cell. The government’s priority is now to .make sure there are enough hospital beds, health workers, ventilators, and e oxygen to give the best possible care to every person who needs.

Over 480,000 of South Africa’s health care workers have been
vaccinated with J&J doses and .Pfizer vaccines are being used to
inoculate people aged 60 and above . About 1.4 million people have been inoculated with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The country is expecting to receive 3.1 million Pfizer doses by the end of June.
