South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Gaborone, Botswana on August 4, leading a high-powered delegation for the South Africa-Botswana Business Round Table. Earlier in April this year, the fifth session of the South Africa-Botswana Bi-National Commission took place in Pretoria. The two neighbouring countries are also celebrating this year 28 years of diplomatic and bilateral cooperation.
The discussions according to official sources will cover trade and investment, energy, agriculture, tourism, youth, sport, infrastructure development, culture, mining, defence, security, immigration, environmental conservation and management, transport as well as information and communication technologies. The statement added that the government and business leaders from both countries would identify concrete steps to strengthen business-to-business linkages
South Africa is a major business partner of Botswana. Its share in Botswana’s imports in 2021 was about 56.8%. South Africa’s exports to Botswana grew by 2.53% or about US$1 billion in the past five years as per the data. Being part of the Southern African Customs Union – an African regional economic organisation – whose members include Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland, they benefit from the duty-free movement of goods with a common external tariff on goods.
