South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa and visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez agreed to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly focussed on the effects of climate change on the continent. The two countries have agreed to work on addressing climate change, the loss of biological diversity, and other environmental challenges.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on global leaders to prioritise solutions to the climate change crisis threatening food security in Africa. He also referred to the effects on the continent of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,  adding that Spain was determined to deepen its relations with the African continent as the two shared many common challenges.

The technological revolution and food security have been affected as a result of the crisis in Ukraine. Migratory movement is another concern that is standing between the west and the African continent. To address these issues, there should be a firm determination by the Government of Spain and countries in Africa to strengthen our bilateral relations, both political and economic, and commercial.
