Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and the federal state leaders have come to an agreement to retain the clan-based system of delegate voting in the elections. Following the decision, Somalia has announced its election schedule. According to the announcement, the parliamentary elections will be held from December 1 to December 27 this year followed by the presidential election on February 8, 2021.

House of the People, which is Members of the Parliament in the Lower House, will be elected through delegates nominated by clan elders along with the electoral body. Election of members of the Upper House, the Senate, will be held from December 1 to 10 followed by the voting for the MPs from December 10 to 27. The registration fee for contestants has been revised upwards. Senate contestants will pay $20,000 instead of $10,000, and the Lower House hopefuls will pay $10,000 up against $5,000 in registration fees.
