With the continuing and intense rift between the president and his prime minister, Somalia has on Sunday, Oct. 10 missed the deadline to hold its presidential elections. The Federal Electoral Implementation Team (FEIT) chairman, Mohamed Irro was quoted as saying that political differences were part of the reason for the delays of both Lower house and presidential elections. Tensions between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble aggravated over the alleged death of a female Somali intelligence officer Ikran Tahlil. Roble has demanded proper investigation of the death of Tahlil.
Irro assured that the committee was confident that the parliamentary elections will take place within the 50-day deadline. He added that this week the delegates are expected to submit who will select the members of the lower house.He also acknowledged the receipt of funding from the international community to conduct parliamentary elections. The Federal Parliament of Somalia has 275 seats.
